A company with purpose

WE AIM TO REVITALISE WILDLIFE AND REVERSE CLIMATE CHANGE

It’s not just businesses we are passionate about growing. Since 2018, we’ve been contributing over 1% of our revenues to reforestation. We’ve been purchasing farmland and converting it back into native woodlands.

The Wolfgang Reforest Mission

HUMANITY IS FACING TWO EXISTENTIAL THREATS. THE CLIMATE CRISIS AND THE EXTINCTION CRISIS.

In 2017, Wolfgang Digital founder Alan Coleman heard writer and broadcaster Manchán Magan on the radio, speaking passionately about the magic of Ireland’s ancient woodlands. Alan was captivated. Within days, he found himself wandering through Tomnafinnoge, the last remnant of the great Tinahely Oak Woods, wide-eyed, inspired, and wondering what Wolfgang could do to help restore Ireland’s lost forests.

Soon after, Manchán visited the Wolfgang Digital office to share his stories in person. The team was spellbound. That day, we made a bold commitment: Wolfgang would donate 1% of its revenues to reforest Ireland. But we didn’t stop there. We also pledged our time and skills to build and market a social enterprise dedicated to bringing Ireland’s forests back to life. And so, Wolfgang Reforest was born.

After three years of setting aside 1% of our revenues, the fund had finally grown large enough to make our first purchase.

In 2019, we set off across Ireland in search of the perfect land to reforest, from Blessington to Brian Boru country in Co. Clare. After many miles and many muddy boots, we discovered an enchanting field bordered by a well-known walkway and a gentle, winding river. Even better, it lay just a short distance from Tomnafinnoge Woods, where the dream had first taken root. This proximity made the site ideal for reforesting with Tomnafinnoge’s own ancient oak acorns, the perfect beginning for the revival of the nearly lost Great Tinahely Oak Woodlands.

Wolfgang Reforest is a social enterprise, which means every cent of profit is reinvested into buying more land and planting more trees. Unlike a traditional charity, we’re structured to grow to scale our impact and help Ireland’s forests thrive once again.

The Science
TAKE A LOOK AT THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE WOLFGANG REFOREST & ITS BENEFITS TO THE IRISH LANDSCAPE.

Re-Greening Ireland

We grew up with the beautiful notion of “Green Ireland”, but this is not the reality. We are the least forested country in Europe, and among its highest per-capita carbon emitters. With a climate ideal for tree growth and formerly forested land ready to recover, Ireland is now the land of opportunity for reforestation.

Revitalising Wildlife

Although Ireland’s green fields and commercial forests appear lush, they’ve devastated biodiversity. Most plantations, like Sitka spruce, are timber-focused, barren ecosystems. Restoring native trees and natural habitats is the most effective way to revive wildlife and protect species.

Reversing Climate Change

Research has shown that planting trees is our most impactful activity for sucking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and stabilising our weather systems. Achieving carbon neutrality means planting a diverse range of native Irish trees in areas where they once naturally thrived.

REVIVING THE LOST WOODS OF TINAHELY: THE STORY OF THE WOLFGANG FOREST

Reforest WG 124

Just beyond Aughrim in Co. Wicklow, in the quiet River Ow valley, sits the site of our first reforestation project.

We started with 15 acres of land bordered by the Wicklow Way and the River Ow, with the aim of restoring it to a healthy Native Irish Woodland.

As things took off, we realised we needed more space to plant. Not long after, we bought another 38 acres about 6km down the road. Between the two sites, we’ve now planted over 50,000 native Irish trees, helping to bring back a mix of species and habitats once common in this part of Wicklow.

These new forests are already supporting more wildlife, improving the soil, and helping to restore the River Ow. The Wolfgang Forest is about more than trees - it’s about people coming together to bring life back to the land. We’d love more people to join us as we keep growing.
